Daybreak Game Company president John Smedley took to Twitter last night to proclaim that 1 million copies of the studio’s zombie survival game H1Z1 have been sold since it launched on Steam’s Early Access service in January.
At a million alpha copies sold in three months, H1Z1 is now in the same league as Early Access sales stars like DayZ (1 million sold in a month) and Rust (1 million sold in two months.)
The company formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment could probably use a bit of good fortune, having last month suffered sweeping layoffs in the wake of being sold to Columbus Nova and rebranding itself as the multi-platform studio Daybreak.
Speaking to Gamasutra in January, Smedley seemed enthusiastic about selling H1Z1 on Early Access ahead of its expected console debut.
“Steam is a great platform to do that because the userbase they’ve built around Early Access has really metastatized,” said the Daybreak chief. “I think it’s actually a great path for developers to take.”
